BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Alabama has one of the highest obesity rates in the country.

In fact according to the Kaiser Family Foundation nearly 70% of men in Alabama are either overweight or obese.
June marks men’s health month.

Here are some thoughts from UAB Psychologist Dr. Josh Klapow:

Diet for many of us is one area that could stand some improvement. but we don’t typically think of dieting as a guy thing and even men who get physical activity tend to neglect their eating habits.

We don’t think about “diet” as a guy thing-and yet the irony is that a healthy diet is the foundation of almost every sport we sit on the couch and watch. and dieting – or really eating healthy is just based on a set of skills – just like any sport or hobby.

You have to approach this like learning a new skill-so first, consulting your doctor, then places like the american heart association have excellent free information on healthy eating.

Next- you need to set a reachable weight loss goal. You want to lose 40 pounds? then your goal should be 1-2 pounds each week.

Step three- grab a sheet of paper and write down what you eat; it will help keep you from cheating.

Step four – arrange for success, you can’t snack on sweets if they are not in the house and you’re less likely to eat your kids’ leftovers if they clear their own dinner plate.

Step five-team effort. either it’s playing basket ball or dieting, it’s easier stick with your diet if you have others pulling for you.

Finally- reward yourself. Dieting shouldn’t be torture. If it is, you are going to fail. You need incentives. If you have cut down on sweets for 2 weeks or when you lose that first five pounds, give yourself a reward.

Look we can master football, car repair, and business. Dieting is simply another task to master. Here’s the one big difference. You learn how to eat a healthy diet and you’ve learned a skill that may actually save your life.
