(WIAT) — There’s no denying it, summer has arrived.

Summer in the South can be brutal, not just for family or pets, but also for one’s budget.

There are some things that can be done to help cut down on power bills.

It’s best to change the filter in the air conditioner if you cannot remember when the last time you replaced it.

It’s also important to have the air conditioning unit checked if it hasn’t been check in 2013. This is particularly helpful because a serviced air conditioning unit is energy efficient.

Other tips include keeping the thermostat at 78 degrees or above.

Altering the temperature on the thermostat throughout the day can waste energy.

Additionally, using ceiling fans can also help save money.

For summer operation, the ceiling fan should rotate in a counter-clockwise direction to push cool air downward.
