(WIAT) — Members of the Birmingham Duplicate Bridge Club are playing bridge all day long for a nationwide special event called the Longest Day.

The American Contract Bridge League has partnered with the American Alzheimer’s Association for the new event.

It encourages people to participate in activities in order to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s research.

The Birmingham club is just one of 175 clubs participating in the event.

The Longest Day started with the pajama game at 6:30 a.m. and will go until the last game is over, which begins shortly after 6:30 p.m.

“Studies have shown that playing mentally-stimulating games, such as bridge, can ward off the onset of dementia, so it really correlated really well and seemed like a great fit, you know, for our community,” Darby Padbury said.

The American Contract Bridge League anticipates raising close to $300,000 at the end of the day.
