What used to be weeds is now trees and it’s coming on over: snakes, turtles, frogs, lizards,” explains Vanessa Long Lewis of Midfield.

She says the overgrowth behind the homes along Collier Drive has gotten so bad, it’s covering power lines and pushing into the fences in their backyards.

She asked CBS 42′s In Your Corner to look into the issue. Long Lewis said the wooded area had not been cut back in five or six years.

Neighbors tell us they are afraid to let their children play in the backyard because of snakes.

First we tried to find out who was responsible for the area. A former city council member said it was the job of the City of Midfield as they had cleared the area in the past.

But after calls from CBS42, the  Midfield Mayor’s Office said it was their position now that Alabama Power was responsible.

We contacted Alabama Power. A spokesperson said based on information from CBS42 they “went ahead and conducted tree trimming around the area, which was due for trimming in the near future.”

The power company said it did not have any record of the city or customers contacting them about this specific area being a problem.

On Tuesday we checked back to see how much work had been done and there were big improvements.

The power lines were clear and there was a clear path between the wooded area and the private  property lines. Vanessa Long Lewis says she is very pleased.

She says phase one is complete, now she hopes the city will take over phase two of the work and clean up the area.

Alabama Power says the company follows a schedule for trimming areas around the state. Customers can always call the Customer Service Line at 1-800-245-2244 if they have a problem that needs immediate attention.
