Ala. drug cases delayed by investigation backlog

MGN Online

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Funding cuts and the closure of several satellite drug investigation labs have led to a backlog delaying thousands of criminal cases from going to court.

Satellite labs in Lawrence, Jacksonville and Dothan were too expensive to run, according to officials at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences headquarters.

The department has gone from about 225 employees to 180 employees recently.

Coming up on CBS 42 News at 5, Reporter Kaitlin McCulley will have details on how this backlog could affect jails across the state.
