GADSDEN, Ala. (WIAT) — Police in Gadsden are searching for suspects in a horrifying early morning robbery that left Leticia Edwards and her husband bloody and bandaged.

Edwards still has a hard time believing what happened to her and her husband early Monday morning.

Someone broke into their home on Cansler Avenue and, when Edwards’ husband tried to intervene, violence broke out.

“[He] stabbed my husband in the stomach and cut his arm. He was going to stab him again, and when he did, I was trying to break it up, and when I was trying to break it up he cut me on my hand,” Edwards explained.

Both Edwards and her husband were injured and will likely make a full recovery, but what is most alarming to her is that their daughter was in the other room.

“To know that my baby is less than 30 feet away, and she usually sleeps in the living room,” Edwards said. “She could have been stabbed, too.”

As far as they can tell, nothing was taken from the home.

However, they have a sneaking suspicion about what the suspect was after – prescription drugs left over from her husband’s cancer treatment.

“The detective I was talking to [Monday], she said that it may have been somebody thinking that he had some high dosage prescription medicine or something,” said Edwards.

Perhaps worst of all, though, is that Monday was the couple’s five year wedding anniversary.

Instead of a joyous, memorable time to recall five happy years together, Monday was marked by a frightening event and time spent at the hospital.

“It was the most horrendous thing in the world. It was absolutely terrifying,” she stated. “It was absolutely terrifying.

“I could have woke up to more of a tragedy.”

The question now is whether they’ll ever feel safe at home again.
