(WIAT) — One man is going the distance for sick children by traveling across country on four wheels.

However, he’s traveling on a long board instead of a car, truck or SUV.

Darrian Balongie is making the long trek from New York to San Diego to raise awareness and money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in his hometown of Memphis.

He passed through Birmingham on Tuesday.

Balongie says the trip is personal to him.

“I had a little cousin, Christopher Dorian Mitchell, he was diagnoses with leukemia before his first birthday,” Balongie explained. “[He] didn’t make it to his second, but he spent his last month at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where they took great care of him. I just want to raise some funds and awareness so other kids might make it.”

Darrian has been on the road since June 1st.
