(WIAT) — Summer is in full swing, and the temperatures are high just about anywhere you go.

Keeping cool can be difficult, especially when it comes to your home air conditioning and your household budget.

It’s possible, though, to save five to ten percent with every degree you’re willing to go up on the air conditioning unit.

Raising the thermostat four degrees on a $100 monthly energy bill could lead to a savings of $5 to $10 each month.

Heating and cooling account for half of monthly energy costs.

In addition to those changes, how you feed your family can also make a difference.

Ceiling fans can also help with cooling costs.

In the summer, fans should turn counterclockwise to pull up cooler air.

In the winter, fans should be reversed so that the blades push warm air down.
