Gender biased language removed from state documents

SEATTLE, Wash. (WIAT) – You won’t find any “Freshman” walking around high school and college campuses in the State of Washington this fall.

The word is now being replaced by “first year student.”

It’s part of a new state initiative to remove gender based language from the state code.

From now on a “fisherman” will be known as a “fisher”.

And “penmanship” will be referred to as “handwriting.”

The words “he” and “she” are also being included in all 3,500 sections of the state code.

Washington is not the first to do this. They follow Illinois, Florida and North Carolina.

Nine other states are currently looking to make the same changes.
