PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (WIAT) — Birmingham Mayor William Bell attended a special event in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Thursday.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter honored Birmingham and the city’s civil rights commemoration during Philadelphia’s Welcome America 4th of July Celebration.

Mayor Bell read the Declaration of Independence at Independence Hall, where the document was debated and adopted in 1776.

More than 60,000 people attended the Fourth of July celebration.

“It is such an honor to be included in such a historic celebration. We thank Mayor Nutter and the City of Philadelphia and we invite them to join us in Birmingham in September for Empowerment Week,” Mayor Bell said in a statement on Thursday.

In addition to reading the historic document, Mayor Bell also participated in Thursday’s parade. He rode on a float dedicated to Birmingham and its 50 Years Forward campaign.
