Costly Errors give Braves 2-0 Series Lead vs. Barons

Braves win 6-1

Birmingham, AL — The Birmingham Barons dropped game two of their five game series against the  Mississippi Braves by a score of 6-1 Friday night in front of 4890 fans at Regions Field.
The Barons scored their first and only run of the game on a Marcus Semien leadoff home run into the home
run porch in left field to give the Barons a 1-0 lead in the first inning. The homer was Semien’s ninth of the
season and third against the M-Braves.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Robby Hefflinger swatted a solo home run to centerfield against starter
Nick McCully to give the M-Braves a 2-1 lead. The lead would grow to 4-1 in the fifth when Tyler Saladino’s throw to first on an infield single by Mycal Jones sailed high over the head of first baseman Michael Earley, allowing Christian Marrero to score from second.

Christian Bethancourt would plate the second run of the inning on a sacrifice fly, scoring Jaime Pedroza. Another Saladino error in the sixth opened the door for two more M-Braves runs on an RBI hit by Christian Marrero and a sacrifice fly by Jaime Pedroza, giving the M-Braves a 6-1 lead.

All six runs scored by the Braves came against McCully (7-3, 2.69), who took the loss despite allowing just three earned runs. The loss was his second in a row after winning his first five as a starter. Picking up the win for the M-Braves was Michael Lee (4-6, 4.33) who allowed just one run on six hits over 5.0 IP. With the loss, the Barons fell to 52-35 and 8-9 in the second half while the M-Braves improved to 45-42 and 7- 10 in the second half.

The Barons will look to snap their two-game losing skid tomorrow night as RHP Stephen McCray (7-6, 4.17) takes the hill against LHP Ian Thomas (3-5, 2.98). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT.
