(WIAT) — The consistent downpours of rain Alabama has experienced over the past week has caused dangerous conditions on many roadways.

“A lot of people can’t drive when it’s dry, much less when it’s wet,” John Long quipped.

Hydroplaning is a dangerous and constant issue when rain falls, and it’s been particularly dangerous over the past few days with much of the ground becoming too saturated to soak up any excess water.

“People just don’t pay much attention on the road around here in this area,” Caleb Goertz said.

Some may think bad driving is a funny topic, but when a low spot becomes a deep lake in the middle of the road, or a sheet of water flowing down a hill, most motorists will have trouble.

Couple the Fourth of July holiday with a week of wet weather and it’s been a busy time for Alabama State Troopers.

“I won’t say it’s an increase, but out lines have been constantly busy sending troopers to car crashed,” Trooper Curtis Summerville explained.

Summerville says the biggest reason for the wrecks, however, isn’t the rain.

Instead, it’s something every driver can control – their speed.

“You have to slow down when it’s raining. The dynamics of a vehicle are greatly, drastically affected when it rains,” Summerville said. “Tires are made to tread water. However, they cannot when you’re driving too fast.”

Wrecks will inevitably occur, though, and Summerville says there are other things drivers can do to get themselves out of a bad situation.

“Come up off the accelerator. Allow the vehicle to brake at its own speed,” he advised. “If you are sliding as hard as it may seem, you are actually supposed to turn the vehicle in the direction of the slide.”

He says that will help get traction back quicker.
