SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE: Shelby County Sheriff’s Office released an official statement on Sunday night’s fire.
In it they state that a 911 call was received at 8:50 p.m in regards to a structure fire in the 3900 block of North Chesapeake, the Lakes at Inverness apartments, in northern Shelby County.
Shelby County Sheriff’s deputies, and the Cahaba Valley, Hoover and Birmingham Fire Departments all responded to the call.
The fire resulted in one death. Mark Wayne Gambrell, 59 years of age from Birmingham, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Shelby County and State Fire Marshal’s investigators responded to the scene and their preliminary investigation revealed a kitchen fire as the point of origin but the final determination has not been reached.
At this point the investigation is ongoing.
ORIGINAL: The investigation continues this morning into a deadly apartment fire in Shelby County.
Firefighters were called to the Lakes of Inverness apartments on North Chesapeake Drive around 9:50 Sunday night. One person was found dead.
No other information about the person was released. Several people have been displaced.
Shelby County Deputies, and Cahaba Valley, Hoover and Birmingham fire departments all responded.
Shelby County and the State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating.
