Body of missing 61-year-old found in water at East Lake Park

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — UPDATE (3x): According to Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Florence left behind a debit card and cash at his home before leaving.

Florence also left behind a note saying he was going fishing at Eastlake Park.

Christian says, though nothing is confirmed at this time, the incident could be intentional.

UPDATE (2x): According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, the body that was removed from the lake is that of 61-year-old Glenn Florence.

The cause of death has yet to be determined.

Florence had been missing since Sunday. According to Florence’s son, his father left a note saying he had gone fishing at Eastlake Park.

He drove to East Lake Park and found his father’s van but did not feel safe looking for his dad by himself.

He contacted Birmingham Police and an officer walked around the park with him, but they were still unable to locate his father.

Crews searched for Florence on Monday but did not find anything.

Around 2:45 p.m. on Tuesday, a man who was walking around East Lake Park reported seeing a floating body that matched the description of Florence.

Authorities arrived on scene and removed the body from the lake.

UPDATE: According to Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, around 2:45 p.m., a man who was walking around East Lake Park discovered the body of a male fitting the description of a man authorities have been searching for in a missing persons case.

The man notified Birmingham Police.

The body is in the process of being recovered.

The identity of the body has not been revealed at this time.

ORIGINAL: Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, authorities discovered a body floating in the lake at East Lake Park.

More officials are currently arriving on the scene to investigate.

While there is a missing persons case currently underway involving someone who was last believed to be in the park, it is not yet known at this time if that case is related to today’s findings.
