BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A couple from Ann Arbor, Michigan are traveling to 45 cities across the United States giving away free pie.

Sarah Fertig, one of the masterminds behind the Pie It Forward movement joined the group as they made a stop in Birmingham on Wednesday evening.

The group passed out pies to people at Railroad Park.

The idea first came to light after a political speech by former Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren.

The speech highlighted the need to pass along kindness through works.

“I decided to put some action behind my words and start giving away pie to spread kindness and generosity,” Fertig explained.

The couple left at the beginning of March for their first stop in San Francisco and have been on the road in a camper ever since.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the couple’s travels, though, is how they are going about doing it.

“We’re totally living off donations, so there have been days where we didn’t know how we were going to get to our next stop,” Fertig said. “Ultimately, we always find the most generous loving kind people on the side of the road and we’ve gotten help every step of the way.”

Their trip is completely funded off of donations and human kindness.
