Boy Scouts ban obese members from attending National Scout Jamboree

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — One of the most anticipated events of the year for Boy Scouts is the National Scout Jamboree.

Held in West Virginia, 50,000 Scouts and leaders gather for a major celebration of Scouting and all that it entails.

This year, though, the Boy Scouts of America are telling some scouts and their troop leaders to stay home.

One of the requirements to attend is to maintain a body mass index (BMI) below 40.

A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America says it’s not safe for obese children and adults to participate in the physical activities.

The organization says it offers thousands of other summer camp experiences that do not have the body mass index requirement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children with a BMI over 32 are classified as obese.
