TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — A routine traffic stop became anything but routine when roosters got involved.

Tuscaloosa law enforcement attempted to make a traffic stop on a Ford Expedition that had run a red light in the early hours of the morning on Monday.  When the suspect refused to stop, a chase ensued.

Law enforcement followed the vehicle for about 10 to 15 minutes, and during that time they began to notice something flying from the car.

“I mean, there were feathers.” Lt. Andy Norris with the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s office explains, “You know?  Coming from everywhere, and at first, they thought he threw a pillow out the window.”

When the chase ended near T.Y. Rogers Jr. Boulevard, investigators discovered the feathers had actually come from roosters.

An unknown number of the animals had either been thrown or flew out the moving vehicle.

Authorities recovered 54 roosters which were transported to the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter.

Investigators say the two suspects, Brandon Michael LeBouef and Santos Dardar of Louisiana, had stolen the roosters from a Tuscaloosa county man.

The roosters resemble breeds that are sometimes used in cockfights.

Investigators say there was no other evidence in the vehicle to indicate that the animals would be used in a fight.

The Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter also confirmed that the surviving roosters appeared to be in good health.

The roosters have now been returned to their owner.

LeBouef and Dardar remain in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a variety of charges including first degree theft.

Investigators say animal cruelty charges could also follow.

Animals control has also been notified about the rooster who was still wandering around the interstate today who was shown in the above video.
