Back-to-school spending likely to be less in 2013

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — This year, the average family will spend around $50 less than last year for back school items.

According to the National Retailers Association, many families had put off purchasing big ticket items until the economy improved, which meant record sales for retailers in 2012.

Now, students are using laptops, tablets and other pricey goods, which will be reused this year.

This means families most likely won’t have to spend as much.

The average family is expected to spent around $635 this year.
