Former Birmingham police officer arrested on robbery, ethics violation charges

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A Birmingham police officer has been arrested on two counts of first-degree robbery and two counts of ethics violations.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the Thursday morning arrest of 27-year-old T’Derek Luster.

The first robbery took place on July 13, 2013 at around 1:30 a.m. on 51st Street, according to the Birmingham Police Department. The second robbery occurred on July 17, 2013, around 3:20 a.m. and involved the same victim.

Both of Luster’s first-degree robbery warrants carry $250,000 bond. Likewise, both ethics violation warrants $250,000 bond.

“We are extremely disappointed by the actions of this former officer. As the leader of this department, I will not tolerate this illegal behavior by any of our personnel,” Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper said in a statement released on Thursday. “Luster betrayed the public trust which is critical to successful police community relations. I appreciate the fact that the victim recognized this illegal behavior would not be tolerated by the Birmingham Police Department, so he trusted us to investigate and bring this suspect to justice. I am thankful the vast majority of our personnel work diligently to make Birmingham a safer city but where there is crime and corruption, we will root it out regardless of where it leads.”

Luster had submitted his letter of resignation from the Birmingham Police Department prior to his arrest.

He is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
