MOBILE, Ala. (AP) – Candidates seeking to replace 1st Congressional District Rep. Jo Bonner of Mobile will have only three days to qualify.
Gov. Robert Bentley announced Friday the qualifying will be Aug. 3-5. That’s short but Bentley said he is trying to make sure a successor is elected as quickly as possible.
Eight Republican candidates have already said they will run. No Democrat has announced.
Republican Party Chairman Bill Armistead says the party headquarters in Birmingham will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 to accept qualifying papers. Then the party will accept applications at a location in Mobile from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 5.
Bentley will set the election dates later.
Bonner has resigned to work for the University of Alabama System.
