BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Battalion Chief C.W. Mardis tells CBS42 that the fire department’s investigation into the cause of a three-alarm fire at an abandoned hotel in downtown Birmingham is ongoing, but it appears the fire was intentionally set.
Fire crews battled the blazed for more than two hours on July 24th. The fire caused severe damage to a small building next to the main portion of the old hotel.
Don Lupo with the mayor’s office says the building was condemned in 2010. Lupo adds that the city is currently working with the property owner to determine what will be done with the building.
According to Lup, it would cost the city $1 million to demolish the structure. They would like to see something economically beneficial done with the property.
