HOOVER, Ala. (AP) – The cost of attending college will be going up for students at Alabama State University in Montgomery.

The university’s board of trustees voted Wednesday morning to raise tuition by 10 percent or $793 per year for a fulltime student taking 30 credit hours a year. University officials said the increase will take effect for the 2013-14 school year.

This is the first tuition hike for Alabama State students since 2010.

Board of Trustees chairman Elton Dean said the increase was needed because of cuts in state funding, physical improvements made to the campus and an expansion of the school’s curriculum.

Dean said university officials would continue to look for way to help students pay for the cost of attending ASU.
