Fire breaks out at Dollar Tree in Homewood Monday morning

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Just before 9 a.m. on Monday, the Homewood Dollar Tree quickly became engulfed in smoke and flames.

Shopping center maintenance workers spotted the fire, called 911 and helped get store employees out of the building.

After firefighters arrived, officials made sure everyone was evacuated safely.

“We got on the scene, saw it was a good fire, called the police department,” Lt. Ken Atkinson said. “We came over started going store to store evacuating the stores getting everybody outside.”

K-Mart, Fred’s and Food World. Were also evacuated during the fire, but all three stores sustained no damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
