Suspicious letter found at Wells Fargo tests positive for chemicals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) –  UPDATE: According to Captain Kenneth Hatcher with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, preliminary tests were run on the suspicious letter.

Hatcher says the letter had a weak positive result for some chemicals, and the evidence is being sent to a lab to identify the exact type of chemicals.

People who handled the letter are being decontaminated and will be taken to UAB Hospital for testing.

ORIGINAL: A suspicious package has caused an investigation at a Wells Fargo bank in Birmingham.

According to the fire captain on the scene, officials received a call about a suspicious package around 6:00 p.m.

An employee at Wells Fargo discovered a suspicious letter with threatening language.

Hazmat teams responded to the scene and are currently inside the bank conducting testing.

Employees have been quarantined inside the bank while crews conduct tests.
