BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—Despite a nearly two-hour lightning delay, the Samford football team went through its first full-pad practice of fall camp Wednesday afternoon at Seibert Stadium.

The Bulldogs made it through the first eight periods of practice before storms moved in, causing the long delay. Once the inclement weather left the area, the Bulldogs came back out and finished the 20-period workout.

Samford senior linebacker Justin Shade said the long delay did not keep the Bulldogs from having a productive practice.

“We came out and we got our focus back,” Shade said. “It started with our flex and we all got together and said ‘we have to remember what our goal is.’ And we really got our focus back and it was a great practice after that.”

The practice was the fifth of fall camp for the Bulldogs. Shade said it was a good feeling to have full pads on for the first time in camp.

“It felt good,” Shade said. “You’re still getting used to having all of your pads in, but I think overall it was a good practice.”

Shade returns for his senior season after ranking third on the team with 70 tackles as a junior in 2012. Shade said there is still a lot of work he needs to do before the season starts.

“I’m just trying to get better in each and every phase,” Shade said.

The Bulldogs will practice again Thursday in full pads. The practice is scheduled to begin at 3:50 p.m. at Seibert Stadium.

Samford opens the 2013 season on Friday, Aug. 30, when the Bulldogs travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in the Georgia Dome. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. (CT) start.
