DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) — The escape of a girl from a Dothan motel room has resulted in the arrest of a Tennessee man on a human trafficking charge.
Dothan police said 28-year-old Alonso Santiagito of Arlington, Tenn., faces human trafficking and drug charges. He made his first court appearance Monday.
Police say Rice is accused of picking up a female juvenile in Mississippi and driving her to Dothan, where police say he beat her, forced her to use drugs and made her work as a prostitute.
Police became aware of the case when the girl escaped from a motel room and sought help.
Police say the ongoing investigation now includes federal authorities and may involve multiple females.
The defendant’s court-appointed attorney was out of his office Tuesday morning and not available for comment.
