BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – A UPS Airbus A300-600 crashed just outside of the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport Wednesday morning, leaving the two pilots dead and scattering debris and boxes around the crash scene.

Residents described hearing an explosion, a sound which one man described as a “sonic boom.”

“About 5 o’clock I was awakened to my house shaking,” resident Eddie Smith said. “About ten minutes after that I heard another sonic boom.”

People in the nearby Eastlake area of Birmingham reported hearing the plane crash, and many went outside to see try to find out the exact cause of all the commotion.

“After I heard the sonic boom and it shook my house, that alarmed me to find out what was going on,” Smith explained. “But I still didn’t know. And then the second boom. That’s when I got up and I seen the smoke towards the left.”

Sharon Wilson lives in the area and heard the explosions as well. She heard the plane go over her house, which she described as sounding “closer than usual.”

“Then, all of the sudden we heard this loud boom, but we had no idea that it was a plane crash,” Wilson said. “It was quite scary when we did see what had happened so close to the front door.

“The plane had went down, and you could see all the debris and paper and everything on the ground. It was scary. And then we saw the black smoke and oh my God, it’s quite scary.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has a crew headed to the scene of the crash to begin an investigation.
