Clay City Council sales tax proposal passes unanimously

CLAY, Ala. (WIAT) – Clay residents will have to pay a little more on certain taxes soon.

The proposal to raise the sales tax by 2 cents was brought up in July. On Monday, it was brought to a vote.

The sales tax proposal passed unanimously Monday evening with an amendment. At least 35 percent of the new tax collected will be earmarked for public safety.

At least 10 percent will go to the schools within the city limits.

The final 55 percent will be used towards general funds and can be assessed towards any needs seen by the city council.
