Lipscomb fire chief fired, regains job hours later

LIPSCOMB, Ala. (WIAT) — Tuesday was a long day for the Lipscomb Fire Department and its chief. In the span of three and a half hours, Chief John Lawrence was fired and subsequently got his unpaid job back.

The process to get to that end was anything but orderly and calm, though.

Tempers flared during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Mayor McDade calls the firing of Lawrence “his prerogative” and part of a disciplinary issue from a call several weeks ago.

Chief Lawrence says the firing is a personal issue and that the issue concerning the call had been dealt with previously.

McDade admits that he has no documentation concerning complaints he listed as reasons for Lawrence’s dismall.

Lt. Janet Lawrence is still relieved of duty but is subject to a due process hearing at a later date.
