BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – The incident at an Atlanta-area school that ended with shots being fired, showed that even schools with the highest security can still be targets.

Some schools in the Birmingham area have some of the tightest security measures available.

Leeds High School, regarded as one of the safest schools in the state, has a number of features that make it so secure.

“We added safety doors. We also increased security cameras and the ability to look at more cameras at one time,” Superintendent John Moore said.

Moore says technology is only part of why the school so secure.

To him, the biggest part comes from the faculty and staff – the eyes and ears in the classrooms and in the hallways.

“Our staff members are very vigilant,” Moore said.

While the teachers have adjusted to the safety measures and have worked to make school more secure, perhaps the biggest surprise has been the awareness from the students.

“Within the environment we live in today, they have to also be responsible to report strangers in the school and on the campus, and that has happened,” explained Moore.

However, the question still remains: could an incident like what happened in Georgia, or even worse, Sandy Hook, happen closer to home?

“It can happen anywhere, but with the proper planning and practice and drill and the right resources in place, I think you really reduce your chances of tragedy,” Moore commented.

Moore believes the shootings in Connecticut were the catalyst safety improvements made in Leeds and in other schools in the area.
