BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT)  — Safety is important regardless of the job. For coal miners, the risk for ailments, such as black lung disease, is large. Now, a healthcare provider in Birmingham is working to keep coal miners safe while on the job.

Birmingham Health Care’s (BHC) black lung department has been giving free screenings for coal miners with their mobile testing center.

Black lung disease can affect anyone exposed to coal dust.

The BHC is the only clinic in Alabama that offers testing for the disease.

Benefits counselors for the organization want to inform workers that the valuable service exists.

The BHC mobile testing site will be at the Residence Inn on Lakeshore on Friday.

They will offer screenings and hand out information about benefits.

The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
