JEMISON, Ala. (WIAT) – Hundreds of people spent part of their weekend enjoying the 5th annual Rescue 1 Rodeo in partnership with The Amazing Grace Worship Center in Jemison.

The two organizations come together each year to give families a positive family friendly event to enjoy. But under the surface is a very serious topic.

Rescue 1 is a Tennessee based non-profit that works to help educate people about human trafficking and rescue those from the underground industry.

Roughly 300,000 children are forced into the sex industry each year, It is the world’s third largest illegal market.

Genia Blankenship is with the Amazing Grace Worship Center. She says she couldn’t believe how big of a problem human trafficking continues to be. “We’re just in shock to learn 24 million are still enslaved.”

In Thailand, 60-percent of the two million victims working in the sex trade are under the age of 18. But it’s also found right here in the United States.

Rich Powell with Rescue 1 explains, “The United States is the number one consumer of sex trafficking. 80% of trafficking comes from sex trade. Average age is 12- 16 years old.

Rescue 1’s mission is to help educate the masses to help bring awareness to the problem.

Since the non-profit started it’s work 270 children have been saved. But that’s just a drop in the bucket considering how many more are still out there hoping someone, anyone, will recognize their horror and lend a hand.
