MONTEVALLO, Ala. (WIAT) – No one was hurt last February at Chelsea Middle School when a man with a gun entered the campus.
Shelby County spokeswoman Cindy Warner says the incident was a key reason for changes now in place this school year. “Obviously we were already trying to get something in place because of what happened at Sandy Hook but then the incident we had locally also intensified our effort.”
Things have changed in last six months. Shelby County has revised its security procedures with a new safe schools initiative.
The architectural changes are obvious the moment you walk into Montevallo High School.
The entry way has been completely redesigned to ensure no one gets in without passing by the main desk.
“The front office and the new entrance here at the high school very much takes into consideration that you can no longer just walk into the school and have easy access into the school without going past the front desk first.”
Work is still being done to complete the security upgrades at Montevallo Elementary.
Principal Doctor Allison Campbell says she looks forward to its completion in October.
“Absolutely one of my first responsibilities as principal is to make sure our students stay safe. so with this new implementation of the buzz in system we’re able to monitor that very closely.”
The county, the school system, and municipalities have also come together to ensure each school has a security presence.
“It makes everyone feel a little more calm and if we’re able to feel calm we’re able to focus on what we are here to do.”
