BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — April Thomas says her daughter, Janiah, has always loved animals. It’s for that very reason that Thomas was shocked when a neighbor’s dog attacked Janiah as she was walking to a friend’s house on Friday night.
“He broke loose and just charged straight for her. And there were neighbors that were trying to help her, they were beating the dog,” Thomas said. “They told me they tried to beat the dog but he wouldn’t let go. And someone fired a gun and he finally ran off.”
Janiah, 5, was rushed to Children’s of Alabama where she underwent surgery for serious head wounds.
Her mother says doctors will have to reconstruct her left ear.
Despite all that has happened, Janiah is in good spirits and her mother is optimistic about the future.
“I’ve been getting much more sleep now. First, it was restless not knowing if everything was going to be okay,” Thomas explained. “Now that she’s talking and moving, it makes me feel good knowing that she’s talking and moving and she’s going to be okay.”
While Janiah isn’t talking about the dog attack, what she is discussing is what really tells the whole story.
“I want to go home. That’s all I can get out of her,” Thomas said.
