UPDATE: Chief Dennis Matthews with the Ashville police department has confirmed the cause of death of Ashley Cartier.

The morning sunlight temporarily blinded her, causing the accident.

ASHVILLE, Ala. (WIAT) – An accident in St. Clair County Friday morning has left a 17-year-old Ashville High School student dead.

According to the Ashville Police Department, 17-year-old Ashley Cartier died after her car collided with a school bus from behind. She was a senior at the high school.

A call was received around 6:54 a.m. about an accident involving a special needs bus. The bus was stopping to pick up a student when Cartier’s 2001 Kia Sephia hit the bus from behind.

Police say no students were on the bus at the time of the accident.

Cartier was pronounced dead at the scene.

The pep rally originally scheduled for Friday afternoon at Ashville High School has been cancelled. However, the football team still plans to hold its Friday night game against Springville High School.

The school will observe a moment of silence in remembrance of Cartier before the game, and balloons will be released in her honor.

It’s still unclear whether or not the band will participate during the game. Cartier was a member of the band and the dance line.

St. Clair Count Schools Superintendent Jenny Seals released the following statement:

Today in St. Clair County [our] hearts are broken over the loss of one of our students.  Our administrators, counselors, faculty and local youth pastors have combined efforts to offer support to our students.  The students have been encouraged to talk to each other, write their thoughts and write letters to Ashley’s family.  We are here for students and the family as we continue to support them and lift them up in our prayers.  Ashley was a senior at Ashville High School and a member of the dance team.  She will be missed by her friends and the faculty of Ashville High School.
