TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – A University of Alabama professor has received a grant that is sure to put him in hog heaven.
Dr. Josh Rothman was awarded an $18,000 grant to study barbecue.
The grant was awarded from the Southern Foodways Alliance.
Dr. Rothman plans to study how barbecue has become such a cultural phenomenon within Alabama.
While it sounds like an appetizing study, Dr. Rothman says there’s a lot of history involved.
“The easy joke would be that you go from restaurant to restaurant and you just report your finding, but in truth, barbecue, like anything else, has a history to it,” Rothman explained.
He hopes the research will draw more people to Alabama to sample of the famous food.
