LIPSCOMB, Ala.(WIAT) – The tension between the Lipscomb Fire Department and the city’s mayor seems to have bubbled over once again. This time, it has lead to the arrest of Mayor Lance McDade.

The arrest happened during a fire call to a home on 12th Street South shortly after midnight on Monday.

According to reports from the scene, Mayor McDade took issue with the fact that a suspended member of the Lipscomb Fire Department was on the scene.

McDade reportedly tried to have the woman arrested. Instead, after several exchanges with the Brighton Police officer who responded to the scene, the mayor was arrested for interfering with the operation.

Chief John Lawrence says the suspended firefighter was not helping. Rather, she was merely there in case of an emergency.

“If something went wrong, she would be able to call for help, you know, because if [the firefighters] were inside and something went wrong there’d be somebody looking out for us,” Lawrence explained.

“That is really a black mark on the city’s image that we are trying to correct, but the mayor doesn’t seem to want to cooperate with the fact that we need, even though it is a volunteer fire department, we do need them,” City councilwoman Tonya Baldwin added.

CBS42 tried to track down Mayor McDade to get his side of the story, but he did not attend Tuesday’s city council meeting and the only phone number for him was disconnected. Additionally, no one was home when CBS42 went to his residence.
