Fashion Fix: Minimize the midriff

Question from a client: I’m a curvy woman and some items are unflattering on my tummy, what can I do to highlight my assets while minimizing my tummy?

Remember that no body is strictly one “type.” We are all a combination of shapes and we all have to try on different styles to see what suits our body the best. While everyone has their own least favorite feature, we can draw attention away from these areas by using color and embellishment near our face and other areas we want people to notice.

A-Lined Tops:

These tops flare out a bit at the hips and create draping over your stomach, drawing less attention to this area. Just remember that if you wear a belt with these tops, don’t fasten it too tight.

Structure:

Structured dresses and other clothes create straight lines, which elongate the areas where your bulge would appear.

Color Blocking:

People’s eyes will naturally be drawn to the areas where the colors meet.  Find a color block piece that draws attention to your face and other flattering features, and away from your tummy.  This idea also works well with embellishments.

Draped Fabric or Wrap Dresses:

Find clothes that fit well and drape above your tummy but below your chest.  This will draw eyes upward, instead of to your belly.

Undergarments:

Spanx are a girl’s best friend! They are great for pulling in your stomach, but no matter your size, these wonders will create a smooth surface for your clothes to lay gracefully upon.
