BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – For many people, it’s hard to even begin to believe what Birmingham was like 50 years ago. But for those who lived during that turbulent time, it’s a grim reality they will never forget.
During Empowerment Week, it’s a reality that will be remembered.
Birmingham plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the civil rights movement with a large schedule of events during the week. People from all corners of the country are expected to visit the Magic City for the events.
Wednesday Sept. 11 will be coined as a day of service. More than 5,000 volunteers will join forces to clean up city parks, libraries and neighborhoods. Grammy-award winning gospel singers Donnie McClurkin and CeCe Winans will be in town with Trinity Broadcast Network.
On Thursday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. the Alabama Theater will show a screening of “The Watsons Go To Birmingham.”
Then, on Sept. 14, Bill Cosby will make an appearance at the BJCC along with a number of other cultural and entertainment figures. A diversity fair will also be held, which will feature career workshops and cooking demonstrations.
Finally, events held on Sunday will mark the anniversary of the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. Producer Spike Lee is expected to be in town for a free screening of his historical documentary, “4 Little Girls.” The screening is free to the public and will be held at the Alabama Theater at 12 p.m.
CBS42 will air a special of its own on Friday, Sept. 13. Sherri Jackson will give viewers an in-depth look at the work that has gone into making the statue to honor the four girls who lost their lives in the bombing in 1963.
The special, called “Hope and Honor: A Tribute to Four Girls” begins at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 13.
