BIRMINGHAM, Ala (WIAT) – A big concern for parents these days is controlling their children’s internet usage to protect them from on-line dangers.
Tech Tuesday discusses how one father created software to protect his child, and now it’s available to you.
Tech Tuesday’s David Powell discusses this new product.
The following is David’s conversation about Web Curfew.
Tech Tuesday: Web curfew
As parents, we all want to control our kid’s access to the web. One dad in Chicago started a company called Web Curfer to address just that problem. Let’s explore:
* So, what is Web Curfew? A husband and wife in Chicago attended a session at their child’s school where they discussed the challenges of limiting your child’s time online. The wife challenged the husband to write some software to address this problem, so he did. It is called Web Curfew and this app will allow you to manage, by device, when devices can be online.
* So, it limits the amount of time? Yes. What it does is the software connects to the wireless router. You can see each device that is connected to the wireless router and limit the access of that device. So, at 8pm, when it is time for junior to work on his homework, you can simply turn off wireless access for his iPad. But, Mom’s laptop can have access all the time. Device by device, you get to pick which ones can access the wireless network.
* That sounds pretty cool, how much is it? The basic app is free. You have to manually manage the individual devices on the free app. Or, you can pay $5 per month and get a version of the app that allows you to set up predetermined schedules. For example, your son’s access is disabled from 10pm to 7am and your younger daughter’s access could be set for just a few hours after school each day. It has more features and allows you to pre-configure access.
* Where do we find this? Simply go to www.webcurfew.com and all the information is there.
