Trial continues in fatal shooting of Anniston police officer

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) – Testimony continued Thursday in the case of a man accused of fatally shooting an Anniston police officer in 2011.

Joshua Russell is charged with capital murder in the death of 27-year-old Justin Sollohub. Authorities have said Sollohub was shot during a foot chase.

The Anniston Start reported Russell’s sister, Cheryl Bush, said he called her the day of the shooting and it sounded like he was being chased.

Bush said the call ended abruptly, she learned of the shooting afterward and was asked by police to try contacting her brother.

Bush said Russell never answered calls, but replied via text that he was fine but scared. Bush said police asked her to try convincing her brother into surrendering and he never responded.

Testimony will continue Friday.
