(WIAT)- The Clay-Chalkville Cougars are playing a numbers game right now. They’ve won three games in a row, putting them seven games away from a perfect record; that’s earned them a #2 ranking in the state in 6A. However, Coach Jerry Hood has one message for his surging squad, and that’s to focus on opponent number four: Pell City. “I think you guys in the media make it unreasonable, that we’re ranked number two and this team hasn’t done anything,” said Coach Hood before practice Wednesday. “But, somebody has to be ranked number two and so you have to learn to live with that.”

The ranking doesn’t come without reason. His offense is averaging 47.3 points per game, with an average margin of victory of more than 24.0 points. “We’re pretty explosive on offense, thus far,” Coach Hood said, adding, “Defensively, we have nine new starters and we’re trying to find exactly who we’re going to be.” One person whose identity is in stone, is tailback Sidney Battle, who scored three touchdowns in the Cougars win last week against Albertville. Coach Hood put it bluntly, saying, “He’s the lifeblood of our offense.”

Despite their spotless start, the Cougars know they have a tough task at hand Friday night at 7:00. The Pell City Panthers defense is just as impressive as the CCHS offense, only allowing 4.6 points per game. “That’s a good football team right there. They may be the best team in the region,” said Hood. “I think this is a toss-up game, I think they’re that talented.”

Both teams are undefeated entering the game. One won’t be able to say that after Friday night. High implications such as these are why Clay-Chalkville – Pell City is our “Southeast Crane & Hoist Game of the Week.”
