CARBON HILL, Ala. (WIAT) – UPDATE: Carbon Hill Mayor James Richardson has been arrested on charges of sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, harassment and soliciting prostitution, according to the Alabama attorney general’s office.
Richardson, 61, was arrested Thursday evening and booked at the Walker County Jail.
His arrest comes after an investigation by the Walker County District Attorney’s Office and the Alabama attorney general’s office. The investigation produced evidence that was presented to a Walker County grand jury, which in turn issued an indictment on Thursday with the charges.
Richardson faces four counts of first-degree sexual abuse, four counts of custodial sexual misconduct, two counts of harassment and one count of soliciting a prostitute.
Richardson allegedly “subjected four separate victims to sexual contact by forcible compulsion”, according to a release from Alabama attorney general’s office.
He also allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with some of the victims while they were in the Carbon Hill City Jail.
Richardson also is charged with soliciting prostitution from one of the victims.
If Richardson is found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of one to ten years in prison for each of the four first-degree sexual abuse charges and for each count of custodial sexual misconduct.
For the charge of soliciting prostitution, Richardson faces up to one year in prison.
Lastly, the two harassment charges carry penalties of up to three months in prison.
