BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) – Authorities at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport are examining a suspicious, unidentified item found on Friday morning.
The object is being looked at by a federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives bomb squad. The object was taken away from the area from where the public is inside the airport.
Travel was delayed for about 10 or 15 minutes.
Toni Herrera-Bast with the Birmingham Airport Authority released the following statement:
TSA identified a suspicious item inside a checked bag this morning at BHM. In an abundance of caution, our baggage check room and the checkpoint and airline ticket counters above that room were evacuated briefly (from 1129 until 1154) until the Birmingham Police Dept. Bomb Squad could remove the suitcase and the item for further analysis. Operations at BHM have returned to normal.
CBS42 will provide more information as it becomes available.
