SMITHFIELD, Ala. (WIAT) – The Birmingham Chapter of Jack and Jill dedicated a specially designed reading bench in honor of Carole Robertson at the Smithfield Public Library Saturday.
Robertson was one of four little girls killed in the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church. She was a member of the organization.
The Carole Robertson reading corner sits in the foyer of the Smithfield branch. Above the pink and blue painted bench, are photos of Robertson and a proclamation from the State of Alabama.
Robertson’s older sister, Dianne Braddock says she hopes the new reading area reminds children that reading is a catalyst for their lives.
“I hope that the children, children and teenagers take away the reading bench is purposeful. That was something that Carole loved to do. Carole loved to read, and that’s something that opens the world to them,” said Braddock.
The organization also donated more than 250 children’s books to the branch. A reading list with some of Robertson’s favorites is also available at the location.
