TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) – University of Alabama Frozen Tide hockey player, Alex Gutierrez, is recovering following a bicycle accident that happened just two weeks after he made the team. Guitierrez was riding his bicycle along Hackberry Lane near the university’s campus when he was hit by a truck.
Although Gutierrez was new to the team, his teammates rallied around him. It’s no surprise. They explain that there is a deep and almost undefinable bond between the 30 guys that make up the Frozen Tide. Upperclassman Kenny Janssen says, now every practice ends with a prayer for Gutierrez. The Frozen Tide is no stranger to tragedy. The team hasn’t even been around a decade, but in that time 2 players and one assistant coach have passed away.
Players and coaches say stepping onto the ice for the opener this Thursday against US Army Fort Benning will be like a breath of fresh air. It’s an opportunity to work out some of those emotions while honoring their fallen teammates and Guiterrez. It’s also an opportunity to reconnect with fans and do something that they love. Teammates and coaches are optimistic and hopeful that some day soon, Guiterrez will make it to a game and get back on the ice.
The University of Alabama’s hockey team opens the season Thursday, September 25th at the Pelham Civic Complex at 8:00pm.
