BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Demetrius Newton Sr., who was the first black pro tem in the Alabama House of Representatives, was honored Friday with a wreath laying at Kelly Ingram Park. Newton Sr. passed away last week.

Along with his accomplishments as a state representative, Newton is known for representing Martin Luther King Jr. and Rose Parks during the civil rights movement.

The NAACP and Newton’s son say they hope his legacy will live on for years to come.

“I want people to appreciate his legacy and his work,” said Demetrius C. Newton Jr. “He was really concerned about his community.”
