ANNISTON, Ala. (WIAT) – Close to 800 employees at a federal facility in Anniston were forced to stay home from work without pay Tuesday.

The rest of the employees were allowed to come to work for four hours Tuesday morning to collect their belongings and prepare to stay away from the office until the government shut-down comes to an end.

The Center for Domestic Preparedness trains responders to detect bombs and help during disasters. Now, progress at the CDP has stopped in its tracks. Projects are abandoned.

Shannon Arledge, the Public Affairs Specialist for the CDP, left an answering machine message saying he will not be at work because of the government furloughs.

One woman who works for a contracting company with the CDP wanted to remain anonymous, but she confirmed she and others were out of work.

Her company has promised to pay her through the end of the week to keep her from quitting and finding a new job.

“I’m conservative, but you would think that we pay them (lawmakers) to do a job to communicate with one another,” the woman said. “And, sure, politics plays into it but at this point they’re supposed to represent the entire United States, not just a particular group of people.”

She’s hoping to get back to work soon because if the stand-off in congress lasts through the week, her company may not be so generous.
