COLUMBIANA, Ala. (WIAT) — After 45 days in jail without bond, family, friends and supporters of youth pastor Matt Pitt are still clamoring for his release. Supporters have gathered outside the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office for a “jailgate” party in past weeks.

The group gathered again Thursday night.

Reached by phone, Matt Pitt sounded in high spirits. His family has been keeping the faith, but his father says the past month and a half has been tough.

“[Matt’s] is the first situation that I don’t, I can’t actually do anything,” said Larry Pitt, Matt’s father.

The group of people who gathered outside the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office are keeping the faith that Pitt will be released soon.

“Matt keeps us all charged up. He’s been with everyone in [the Shelby County Jail]. He has met so many guys in [the Shelby County Jail],” Larry Pitt added. “He’s just a light.”

Despite Pitt’s stay in jail, his friends, family and other supporters of what has been called the “Free Pitt” movement believe he is innocent. Justice is what keeps the group coming back.

“I don’t feel like he’s done anything wrong except try to reach the youth of America,” said Larry Pitt.

The Free Pitt group’s next planned event is for the weekend of Oct. 12-13 — the weekend before Pitt’s next court date, which is on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
