LOCUST FORK, Ala. (WIAT) – As a guidance counselor at Locust Fork High School, Lisa Butler is always answering questions.
Recently, though, she asked herself how she could help her students do better on standardized tests.
One answer was to buy a study skills curriculum.
“There’s an online questionnaire that [students] can do, a little assessment to see what their study skills are like,” explained Butler.
However, the study guide she wanted to purchase wasn’t in the budget.
So, Butler got creative and applied for CBS42’s One Class At A Time grant program.
And now she’ll have the opportunity to make that purchase. Butler is the recipient of a $1,000 grant as a part of the program.
She wants to use the money to help her students improve their scores, but she also wants to teach them the art of studying.
“They should be able to take the material that they’ve learned in that classroom and do their own study guide,” Butler said.
CBS42’s co-sponsors for the One Class At A Time project are Pepsi and America’s First Financial.
